This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was chefs kiss, it was everything I wanted and more (but I’m still so sad over DEEN 🥲)。Hafsah Faizal really does a great job of attaching us to the characters, especially Altair :)) That ending left me hanging tho 😭 Can’t wait to read the sequel。 Once again, praise to Queen Hafsah Faizal!!

this book was so good i could not put it down。 i loved all the characters, they were so fun and different and i found it easy to root for all of them。 nasir’s character development was so good and the slow burn between him and zafira was so spicy。 there were so many revelations, i could not stop reading!

Another DNF。。。 ugh I'm in such a freaking book slump。I wanted to love this book, I really, really did。 And I did。。。in the beginning but somewhere the along the way the story started to feel really flat and the characters started to feel flat and boring。 I lost interest in the quest fairly early on and really I was just reading for Nasir's POV for a majority of what I read because his POV was way more interesting than Zafira's。 But overall, I just got bored and it started feeling like a chore to Another DNF。。。 ugh I'm in such a freaking book slump。I wanted to love this book, I really, really did。 And I did。。。in the beginning but somewhere the along the way the story started to feel really flat and the characters started to feel flat and boring。 I lost interest in the quest fairly early on and really I was just reading for Nasir's POV for a majority of what I read because his POV was way more interesting than Zafira's。 But overall, I just got bored and it started feeling like a chore to read this book。 Don't get me wrong, Faizal's writing is quite beautiful and well done, I just got bored。。。 I'm rounding up my 2。5 to a 3 star rating, because I did enjoy the book at first and I think the Arab rep is fucking awesome but yeah。。 not my cup of tea I guess。 。。。more

I’m gonna do a full length review at the end of the series, but for now here’s some of my spoiler free thoughts:- a bit slow at the start, but once we really got rolling I couldn’t put it down- Prince of Death over here was such an interesting character to pull apart and excited to see where he goes from here- Out lovely Huntress was extremely relatable for me as a reader although she lacked common sense sometimes, but then again so do I so I’m not judging。 Also very intrigued to see where she g I’m gonna do a full length review at the end of the series, but for now here’s some of my spoiler free thoughts:- a bit slow at the start, but once we really got rolling I couldn’t put it down- Prince of Death over here was such an interesting character to pull apart and excited to see where he goes from here- Out lovely Huntress was extremely relatable for me as a reader although she lacked common sense sometimes, but then again so do I so I’m not judging。 Also very intrigued to see where she goes。 - Oh, and I loveddd the romance 。。。more

The beginning was kinda slow but I think that’s because of the world building so it’s okay。I like the knife to the throat scenes and I like the characters。

I really tried to like this book, I really did。 In the end though, I was massively let down。 Even though I liked Altair's character, not even his (much needed!) banter could save this book。 What got me through the last half was probably just sheer willpower, honestly。I will be writing a review on this book for a uni assignment, so I won't write one now but just post that nearer the summer when it's been graded and over and done with。 I really tried to like this book, I really did。 In the end though, I was massively let down。 Even though I liked Altair's character, not even his (much needed!) banter could save this book。 What got me through the last half was probably just sheer willpower, honestly。I will be writing a review on this book for a uni assignment, so I won't write one now but just post that nearer the summer when it's been graded and over and done with。 。。。more

#2。5 stars#I have heard so many good things about this book, but I didn't have too high expectations。 Still, when I ended reading it I was disappointed。 I LOVE books with Arabian setting, but I guess this one just wasn't for me。 The only things I did like about the book were that the main character was a girl who can fight and that it has enemies to lovers in it。 I needed around 2 weeks just for the first 300 pages (that is a lot for me)。 It was also really similar to Rebel of the Sands trilogy, #2。5 stars#I have heard so many good things about this book, but I didn't have too high expectations。 Still, when I ended reading it I was disappointed。 I LOVE books with Arabian setting, but I guess this one just wasn't for me。 The only things I did like about the book were that the main character was a girl who can fight and that it has enemies to lovers in it。 I needed around 2 weeks just for the first 300 pages (that is a lot for me)。 It was also really similar to Rebel of the Sands trilogy, except that these books are so underrated。-Rei:) 。。。more

Incredible。 The characters, the twists, the emotion— I loved all of it。 The story was fast-paced and the author kept my attention the whole time。 All of the things I look for in a book!

I think my expectations for this book were too high。 It really wasn't terrible, it just was predictable and I had some issues with the characters and writing。 So, Zafira。 Theoretically, she's (almost) everything I like in a heroine。 She's disguising herself as a man to feed her village。 She's fantastic with a bow and arrow and her childhood best friend is in love with her。 What's missing? She's too perfect。 I don't trust someone without a dark side, and she has none。 She's just too good。 She nev I think my expectations for this book were too high。 It really wasn't terrible, it just was predictable and I had some issues with the characters and writing。 So, Zafira。 Theoretically, she's (almost) everything I like in a heroine。 She's disguising herself as a man to feed her village。 She's fantastic with a bow and arrow and her childhood best friend is in love with her。 What's missing? She's too perfect。 I don't trust someone without a dark side, and she has none。 She's just too good。 She never acts selfishly and is just not a very compelling character。 Also, she left her village to starve and ruin to go on a mystical mission on a moment's notice? Hmm。I liked Nasir。 He has his issues too, but a lot of it can be explained by his upbringing。 Reading about him was really hard sometimes。 I want him to be happy and free of pain soon。 He's been betrayed a lot, and now he has all this shit on his conscience。 Seriously messed up。 So, if he were anyone else, I would have an issue with how grumpy he is。 I'm glad he started to open up to Zafira and Altair a little。 Altair was my favorite, from the beginning。 I loved his comments and how he brought everyone together。 Seriously, he had banter with Kifah, Nasir, Zafira, and Benyamin separately。 Some characters (like Kifah and Nasir) rarely connected。My biggest issue was probably with how Nasir and Zafira's relationship is driven by physical attraction。 This was the same problem I had with Elias and Laia。 They see each other and have a brief connection, and then after that, it's just intense staring and quick touches and catching each other half-dressed or saving each other from danger。 Can't we get a YA fantasy romance built on mutual trust and emotional connection? Instead of something along the lines of "He's so beautiful, I'm speechless"?And for how self-righteous and morally upstanding Zafira is, she just jumps into a relationship with a professional assassin? She never questions how many people he's killed and whether she's alright with that。 She complains when they have to kill those safin in self-defense。 She's a little pretentious, honestly。 The titles don't help。 Prince of Death。 Huntress。 The characters actually address each other by these titles, and it's weird af。 Just use their names, or normal titles, like sayyidi or sultani。Altair and Nasir were the real couple here。 I hope their relationship gets explored more。 And I would kill for Altair's POV in the next book。(view spoiler)[How the fuck did the group just leave him behind? No one checked on him after he did the light thing? What the fuck? (hide spoiler)]Minor complaint that is probably not PC, the Arabic words the author dropped in constantly。 It was too much, and I hate myself for saying that。 But without a glossary, the author was forced to explain the meanings in the book。 That led to awkward-sounding and redundant sentences like: "Sabar, sabar," he soothed, asking for patience。"Do you not trust me to care for you, azizi?" She pressed her lips together at the nickname "my darling。" Again, small complaint。 But the words aren't italicized to stand out, and the reader is expected to remember the meaning after encountering it once。 It's hard to go back and try to find where I first read the word to figure out the meaning。 And then, the author makes up her own curse words (daama, ramaal) which are unnecessary。 And some words are just never defined - yalla, shukrun。 I got annoyed。 I could've forgiven that if the writing was exceptional, but it wasn't。 There were stretches of description that weren't really important。 Lots of describing feelings rather than actions。 Lots of describing appearances instead of adding dialogue。Oh, the plot。 I almost forgot to talk about it (that's how great it was lol)。 Nothing frickin' happened for the longest time。 (view spoiler)[After Deen's death, it's a long-ass journey through the forest。 Occasionally they'll run into groups of enemies and fight them off, but nothing moves the plot forward until the very end。 Surprise! A villain is back that was mentioned like once and we don't really know or care about。 He turns out to be the father of Altair to make things more interesting。And the plot centers around a magic book that can restore magic to the world。 Except some people already have magic。 And the book binds itself to Zafira, unless she trips and drops it。 And to restore magic to everyone (seems problematic but no one's considering that) they have to do something with the five hearts and minarets? Idk。 The big goal (restore magic) isn't personal to the characters。 Feels like a big disconnect。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Althought it's different to what I usually read I really enjoyed this one。 The plot line was very fun and unique and the characters within this story were amazing。 Zafira is an intelligent and unassailable woman, who proves she is just as good as a man, in a place where women are mothers and wives, as opposed to warriors。 Nasir was the typical dark silent type, but there was so much depth to him and his story。 The rest of the Zumra (gang) were all really interesting and I really loved the relati Althought it's different to what I usually read I really enjoyed this one。 The plot line was very fun and unique and the characters within this story were amazing。 Zafira is an intelligent and unassailable woman, who proves she is just as good as a man, in a place where women are mothers and wives, as opposed to warriors。 Nasir was the typical dark silent type, but there was so much depth to him and his story。 The rest of the Zumra (gang) were all really interesting and I really loved the relationship between them all。 This was knife to throat enemies to (kinda) lovers, as in they tried to kill each other multiple times。 I'm hoping the next book gives us more of Zafira and Nasir。 As a newbie to middle eastern stories I really appreciated the use of a glossary/pronunciation guide at the back, it made the read much more enjoyable and made me feel more part of the world。 I think the pacing was a little off, then end climax was over very quickly, whereas the beginning was very slow paced and I had to push myself to get into it (although for a first book in a duology I do expect a more descriptive first book)。 Once I got to the second part of the book I was really invested and loved the story。 I cant wait for the next one 💫 。。。more

Sadly, it was the only magical thing about this book。 I forced myself over and over every day for almost a week to read this and I had to just admit defeat and DNF at page 165 or maybe 185, can't remember。EXPLAINThere was just so much that let me down。 The only character I was remotely interested in was Altair。 Nasir and Zafira were so flat and boring – something was just missing? Ugh, I don’t know。 I liked the idea of them but there was no substance。The worst part for me was the writing – it was so strange – it felt all over the place, the style was weird – I constantly got lost or annoyed because a simple sentence would turn into a riddle, some didn’t even make sense or a simple paragraph was stretched into 3 chapters。 Loved the introduction to the non-English words but it was so inconsistently used, why? Transitions just made no sense (again) and I just felt either frustrated or bored。The plot was so linear, no action and any scenes that had slight action in it was just so insipid。 I could possibly go into more details if I had read the whole thing but honestly I just couldn’t force myself anymore。I understood the vision of this book but it just wasn’t executed as it could have。For a beautifully written Arab inspired fantasy I would rather recommend The City of Brass by S。A。 Chakraborty This must have the right audience somewhere (there are loads of other highly rated reviews for this one) but this just wasn’t for me。 Overall Rating: 21st book in a duologyPublish Date: 14 May 2019Cover Rating: 8/10 Young Adult / Fantasy/Adventure/Romance/Magic 。。。more

this book was incredible。 i always struggle when books are based on arabian culture out of fear that they will take my culture and turn it into either a stereotype or have some sort of punchline or plotline that will leave me upset and hurting–this book didn't disappoint me that way。 not only is the universe built in such a well written way, but the integration of the cultural aspects is so perfectly blended in and well written and i genuinely adored reading it。 the arabic dialect scattered thro this book was incredible。 i always struggle when books are based on arabian culture out of fear that they will take my culture and turn it into either a stereotype or have some sort of punchline or plotline that will leave me upset and hurting–this book didn't disappoint me that way。 not only is the universe built in such a well written way, but the integration of the cultural aspects is so perfectly blended in and well written and i genuinely adored reading it。 the arabic dialect scattered throughout the pages honestly made me feel like i was back in jordan visiting my family rather than in my room reading about a magical world。 the way the plot itself carries you throughout this incredible journey has you hooked from chapter one, and the amount of plot twists and little turns throughout have you never wanting to put it down till you're finished。besides just the beautiful world building, the characters were incredible。 you genuinely fall in love with every single one of the characters you meet (save for maybe the antagonists) and you grow ATTACHED。 i hadn't expected to attach myself to every single character, expected maybe to love zafira and nasir, but NO! you love all them honestly。finally。。。 the romance。 hafsah faizal you gave me everything and more with this enemies to lovers dynamic。 the knife to throat, the tension, the watching from afar and yearning。。。 it was all so beautifully and well written that i genuinely had to put down the book for a moment, scream into my pillow, and then continue reading。 overall, i loved this book。 will 100% be a comfort read i can find myself going back to, plus a book i will never stop recommending。 i loved every second reading! 。。。more

There are two reasons why I decided to read "We Hunt the Flame", both of which are superficial in hindsight。 The first is the Arabian setting (the Arab in me was thrilled)。 The second is the breathtaking cover。 I knew there was a chance I'd hate the book, but I read it anyway because I wanted so badly to like it, for it to be so great and influential, other fantasy authors would say, "Hey, instead of setting my novel in a pseudo-European land, why don't I branch out and look toward other culture There are two reasons why I decided to read "We Hunt the Flame", both of which are superficial in hindsight。 The first is the Arabian setting (the Arab in me was thrilled)。 The second is the breathtaking cover。 I knew there was a chance I'd hate the book, but I read it anyway because I wanted so badly to like it, for it to be so great and influential, other fantasy authors would say, "Hey, instead of setting my novel in a pseudo-European land, why don't I branch out and look toward other cultures for inspiration?" Well, I am happy to say that I liked this book。 I didn't love it - heck, I didn't even like it all the time, but by the end, I was glad that I forced myself to get through the boredom that was the first 30%, because once the main characters met, I was invested。Speaking of characters, they are the best thing about this book。 Not all of them - Deen and Yasmine are pretty useless; the main character keeps going on and on about how important they are to her, yet they're hardly in it。 But the major ones, particularly Nasir and Altair, are great。 They're layered, despicable, tortured, lovable boys。 My heart went out to them, and I wanted them to make it out okay, which is the best compliment I can give to any book。 Fantastic prose and plotting mean nothing unless I actually give a crap about the people involved。 The romance is nice too。 Nasir and Zafira have good chemistry, and I like that the book took its time having the characters test the waters before entering。 I wouldn't necessarily call what they have a slow-burn because they're attracted to each other quickly, but they don't immediately make out either。 Now, with all of that being said, I do have issues with "We Hunt the Flame" - none of which make me regret reading it, but enough that I don't think I'd reread it。 The big one is the terrible world-building。 I'm not talking about from a geographical sense; the way the kingdom is set up and where everything is located is simple to grasp。 What's not so simple is the magic-system and lore。 The history of this kingdom, who everyone really is, and all the different creatures with their different powers and purposes, had my head spinning。 I don't think that this author needed to have dedicated twenty pages to pure exposition, but some clarification and a little more focus would've been appreciated。 It was like Hafsah Faizal had too many ideas spiraling in her brain and she wanted to include them all。 That's why you write sequels, to expand on an already solid foundation。 Another issue I had was with the frequent inclusion of Arabic words。 My Arabic is pretty elementary, but even I could understand that some of the words she used weren't used correctly。 Also, I wonder if this book might be frustrating to read for someone who doesn't speak Arabic at all, because while Faizal does translate some of the words, with others there aren't even any context clues to help。 。。。more

At least there won’t be a real love triangle now。 I really enjoyed reading this book。 The physical copy was much better, although I believe that’s because they actually met then。 It was interesting and kept me wanting to read。 I like the romance in this book and the plot。
